BIO

Roni Toren - set and costumes designer.

Born in Israel. Started as a TV and Radio presenter and editor of documentary, art and music programs. 

Made his art and theater studies in Paris and Tel-Aviv. (Graduate of the Tel-Aviv University). 

Designs for theatre and opera in Israel and abroad. 

Among his works for the theatre in ISRAEL: Taming of the Shrew, Measure For MeasureBlood-Wedding, Cherry Orchard, Seagull, Pygmalion, School for Wives, The Lady From The Sea, A View From The Bridge, Glass Menagerie, Salome, Antigone, Festen, Fiddler on the Roof, CabaretHamlet, Hedda Gabler as well as many Israeli plays. 

Designs for theatre around the world also include The Merchant of Venice (Weimar-Germany), Mother Courage (Tokyo-Japan), Pains of Youth and The House of Bernarda Alba (Coventry- England), Requiem (Beijing- China), The Winter Tale (Freiburg, Germany)

Designed for opera in Israel, Germany (Munchen, Stuttgart, and Saarbrucken), England (London), Italy (Bologna), Monaco (Monte-Carlo), U.S.A. (Santa Fe) Belgium (Antwerp, Gent). 

Among his works for the opera: La Boheme, Tales of Hoffmann, The Magic Flute, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuartda, Roberto Devereux, Boris Godunov, Tannhauser, Salome, La Damnation de Faust, Otello, Don Giovanni, Kullervo, Die Eroberung Von Mexico, Le Nozze di Figaro, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Alcinia. Collaborated with directors such as Sir. Jonathan Miller, David Alden, Johannes Schaaf, Guy Joosten, Inga Levant and Sir David McVicar.

In 2021 published (in Hebrew) the book In Scale 1:1 – Behind the Scenes (Hakibbutz Hameuchad - Sifriat Poalim Publishing House) describing the creative process of scenography.

Awards

  • Silver medal at the 1991 Prague Quadrienalle.

  • Silver medal at the 2005 WSD-World Stage Design Toronto, Canada. 

  • Honorable Scenographer OISTAT- Prague Quadrienalle, 2007 

  • Landau Prize (Israeli Lottery) for special achievements in the Arts, 2009 

  • Israeli Theatre Award for best design of the year - 2011 (Ghetto) 

  • Israeli Theatre Award for best design of the year - 2012 (Cabaret)

  • Israeli Theatre Award for best design of the year - 2013 (Kazablan)

  • Israeli Theatre Award for best design of the year - 2015 (Bernarda Alba) 

  • Israel Ministry of Culture and Sports Award winner for design Artist, 2019

Teaching Professor for stage design at the Tel-Aviv University and at the faculty of Art in Kibbutzim College.
